When Is My Pet Considered a Senior?

Just like people, every pet ages a little differently. Factors like species, breed, and size all play a role in determining when your companion enters their senior years.

Senior Stages for Cats

Cats are generally considered seniors between 7 and 11 years of age. As they age, regular wellness visits become even more important for identifying subtle changes in health before they become bigger concerns.

• A 7-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a person in their mid-50s
• A 15-year-old cat is comparable to a person in their late 70s

Senior Stages for Dogs

Dogs age at different rates depending on their size. Smaller dogs tend to have longer lifespans, while larger breeds often enter their senior years earlier.

• Small dogs may not be considered seniors until around 8–10 years old
• Medium and large dogs often reach their senior years around 7–8 years old
• Giant breeds may be considered seniors as early as 5–6 years old
